This page presents the results of the June 24, 2004 Canadian federal election using a sound map. You must have a Java run-time installed (at least version 1.5) because the sound is managed through a java applet (developed as part of the Nunaliit Cybercartographic Framework). The java run-time (version 1.5 or later releases) can be downloaded here. More information about this map is available here.

Note: At least on some systems using the Abode SVG plugin, the plugin blocks communication between javascript references embedded in SVG (where the user actions such as mouseover must be detected) and the HTML DOM and javascript embedded in the HTML. For that reason, if you are using the Adobe SVG Viewer, you may see a nicely rendered, but seemingly static map. You should probably view the version designed to work with Adobe.

How to use the map:

  • Move the mouse over an electoral district in the map to start playing the audio. Each leader's speech is adjusted according to the party's percentage of the vote in that riding.
  • Moving the cursor over a new district will immediately adjust playback according to the election results in the new riding.
  • To hear an individual leader's speech move the mouse over the legend colour swatches.
