Overview
These pages present the results of the June 24, 2004 Canadian federal election for a small selection of electoral districts in the Ottawa area using sound as an integral part of the map: presenting additional perspectives on the mapped phenomena and atempting to reintroduce some of the complexity of a federal election into the relatively simple visuals of an election map. These maps are implemented using Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), a W3 standard for web graphics.
Two versions of the map:
- Original (Adobe) version, implemented using features specific to the Adobe SVG viewer plug-in, should work with any system/browser combination that supports the Adobe plug-in. If you do not have the Adobe SVG Viewer plugin installed, it can be downloaded here.
- Java version, no longer dependent on features of the Adobe plug-in. Because Adobe is, for business reasons, phasing out support for SVG, I have created a modified version of the election map. This should work for browsers that render SVG natively (e.g., Firefox, Safari 3). This version requires that you have a Java run-time installed (at least version 1.5) because the sound is now managed through a java applet (developed as part of the Nunaliit Cybercartographic Framework). The java run-time (version 1.5 or later releases) can be downloaded here.
